BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in Paris, where her love of art began, Catherine Watters is a botanical artist who paints in watercolor on paper and calfskin vellum. She shows her work in several exhibitions each year, most recently at The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Pittsburgh, PA; the Shirley Sherwood Gallery at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England; the New York Botanical Garden; Filoli, Woodside, CA; the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden; the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and The Horticultural Society of New York.  Her paintings are included in many private collections including The Alisa and Isaac M. Sutton Collection and several permanent collections - The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, The Filoli Florilegium, The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Florilegium, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England, and The Museum of Natural History in Paris.  Catherine is the founder of two Florilegiums, one at Quarryhill Botanical Garden in Glen Ellen, CA and the other at The Gardens at Heather Farms in Walnut Creek, CA.  Her illustrations appear in 5 books, three in the U.S. and two in France: Rare Lilies of California (CNPS), Pruning (Sunset), Western Garden Book (Sunset), Une Histoire des Fleurs (Perrin) and Le Langage des Fleurs (Perrin).  Catherine's paintings have been featured in Horticulture magazine, Victoria magazine and Curtis's Botanical Magazine.

Catherine has been teaching at Filoli since 1999 and is a primary instructor and curriculum developer for the Filoli Botanical Art Certificate Program (see LINKS page). She serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Botanical Artists and lectures regularly on 'The History of Botanical Art' and 'The Gardens of Normandy'. Catherine received her B.A. from the University of California at Davis where she studied French Literature and Art.
